PanAway makes a great oil for pain - insect bites no sting!!

I just got back from Texas babysitting my grandchildren - while walking their very large puppy, he stepped into a red ant hill. Needless to say both he and I were introduced to the little firey devils!!

I was impressed that the PanAway not only took the sting and burn away from the bites (on both of us) but acutally drew the toxin to the surface instead of allowing it to be absorbed into our bodies!

Time Passing

It's been another huge passing of time since I wrote - shame on me!! My daughter had an accident and the months have flown by while she has been in recovery.

During this time we have been very busy!! You can find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. Look for lots of discussion groups starting relating how to use some real cool holistic options for improving your pets health.

These discussions will expand in the near future to a shopping cart and educational webinars. This will prove to be great fun and we hope you come see what we are doing!!

Canine Learning Expereince - Allentown

So much has happened, we will try to get everyone caught up by creating little snip its and if available will link a website to the post.

January 24th, beside being my anniversary, was a fun day in Allentown for Tia and I to be presenting "The 10 Reasons You Should Know Animal First Aid" at the Canine Learning Experience, sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club. www.lvkc.org/cle.htm

Tia and I would have loved to stay all day and check out the great presentations, but we made it back home in time for a late lunch.

This was a unique opportunity to "go to the dogs" quite literally. Lehigh Valley Kennel Club presented a fun filled agenda that held classes for Puppy Kindergarten, Introduced the Sight Hounds to on watchers, held presentations on Animal First Aid, Dogs for The Deaf, Search and Rescue Dogs, Cancer in Dogs - Care & Rehabilitation, Beyond Animal Chiropractic and more than I can remember.

The rings were full as well with again Puppy Kindergarten, Agility demonstrations, Obedience Match Show, the Hilltown Dog Drill Team, an All Breed Puppy Match Show and so much more. http://community.dog.com/forums/t/90455.aspx

There were so many educational programs well worth the drive!!! Check it out for next year the Canine Learning Experience will be held on January 30th and 31st. You just might see Tia and I there!!

Disaster Preparedness

It's been a while since we last posted. A lot to write so we can catch everyone up.

Since the last entry, I've become a member of MCART, the Montgomery County Animal Response Team. MCART is a volunteer group that is part of the State Animal Response Team (SART). You can find more information on the MCART Blog http://montcoanimalresponseteam.blogspot.com/ or go to http://pasart.us/.

The Emergency Management Operations calls MCART's team to action for disasters involving animals. The team works to set up a shelter for the animals close to the Red Cross human shelter. This allows pet owners to visit and help care for their animals. The pet shelter helps to identifies the owner, cares for the pets during the process, and makes sure the pets are safe and local so owners may visit. During times of stress, it is good for both the pet owners and the animals to have as much consistency as possible.

The MCART Team is currently working to provide educational information to the public and local emergency management organizations. Pet shelter sites have been identified, procedures to use during an evacuation, an emergency plan that includes your pets. As a responsible pet owner you need to assemble an animal emergency supply kit and develop a pet care buddy system. You can find information on http://pasart.us/ that can give you direction.

Naturally Healthy Animals: A Day Of Alternative Animal Health Care held on March 3rd at Creamery, PA - the Montgomery County 4-H Center and Extension Service.

Many thanks to The Delaware Valley Yorkshire Terrier Club and and their sponsor Braxton's of Wayne, PA. What a great program they put on. This was a super day, filled with holistic veterinarians, massage therapist, natural products such as all-natural pet foods, oils, essences, herbs and daily care supplies. These included Young Living 's Essential Oils for natural health for yourself and your pet, Equilite and their great pet products, The Sauce and Sore No More to name a few.

Registered attendees attended a day of seminars being presented by experts in their fields.

Keystone Bichon Frise Club Pet First Aid/CPR Training

The Keystone Bichon Frise Club held a wonderfully organized PetTECH Pet First Aid/CPR training seminar at the Morgantown Holiday Inn. A special "Thank You" goes out to Gloria Kilpatrick and Elaine Forstall for all the hard work planning, organizing, implementing and paying close attention to the finest detail. It is that dedication that made this such a nice event.

A special "Thank You" to Debbie and Patty for doing great job showing the techniques during demonstrations and helping provide "Hands-On" support. Great Job!

We were greeted with the smell of coffee, juice and danish to help awaken the group, followed by some hard work before a well planned lunch at break. The break gave students time to digest the material just covered. We had time to chat and interact with each other. Gloria and Elaine even made up "goodie bags" on Friday night that were filled with anything the student might need for the class. I especially liked the snacks included for after lunch to keep everyone alert!

This Club was one of the most enthusiastic classes I have ever taught! They were warm, fun and very intent on learning. It was obvious just how important knowing this material was for their comfort in being able to help their pets in any situation. Many students shared stories about how this knowledge might have changed an emergency, had they been aware of the Pet First Aid techniques and CPR at the time of the emergency.

Gloria, who was taking the class for re-certification explained to the Club how after taking the PetTECH First Aid class previously she was able to utilize the skills taught in choking management almost immediately upon return to her home.

I thought you might like a photograph of some of the first Americans to take the Horse Owners Certificate course.

From left to right are Karen Douglass, Kelly Burgess, Louise Beam BHSAI (their instructor) and Janice Sames.

Louise Beam BHSAI has been living in the US since 1992 and was given permission to teach this course in 2004. Karen Douglass was in that first group of students. She runs a pet and farm sitting business and insists that all her horse carers take the Horse Owners Certificate to ensure their knowledge and care are the best and to show her clients that she thinks continuing education is important. A group of Karen's employees and herself are about to start Level Two this year.

Louise Beam BHSAI has been a member of the BHS for about 20 years and competed in Riding Club events when she lived in Scotland. She now runs a small horse farm in Douglassville, Pennsylvania where she teaches riding and theory to BHS standards. She also competes on her and others horses in Dressage, Combined Training and a little Eventing in between looking after her husband and 2 sons.

Shiba Inu Rescue - Foster Home Network

Hi Everyone,

Just a warning, I've joined the Shiba Inu Rescue and will be looking for Foster Homes for some of our rescues!! Meet my little girl, Tia!

The Shiba Inu breed has begun to show up at rescues and the SPCA's recently. I am very sorry to say, this unique breed has also joined ranks in our Pennsylvania Puppy Mills. This lovely little dog gets you at first sight, it is cute, furry and delightfully put together.

It is such a shame, when buying puppy mill dogs, the prospective buyers never get an opportunity to see the parents, get an education by a breeder, and have an chance to learn if this cute little ball of fur will fit into your household, often not for they have some very unique traits - not everyone can live with.

I am looking to set up network for Foster Homes for Shiba Inu’s, I am working with a New Jersey rescue who is doing everything it can. Anyone who would be interested please contact me. BHS Certifications - Level 1 Horse Owners

Congratulations to our horse care crew. Karen (far left in photo)and Louise(center) shake hands as Kelly, Jan and Carrie (not shown) receive their certificates from England and the BHSI, Louise Beam. These certificates were completed in September. Louise is currently the only British Horse Society Instructor certified to teach this course in the USA. Great Job!

Happy New Year to all our wonderful Clients.

We are looking forward to a fun filled year. We will be continuing our education classes, and providing monthly pet first aid training. We will also be takinging time to certify Tia, her goals this spring are the International Therapy Dog and Canine Good Citizenship. If anyone is interested in getting their dog certified also, please contact the office. We will be setting up testing soon. Trappe Community Days

It was a lot of fun and our raffle winners were Sammy Snell for the Bow-Wow Basket and Barbara Barattucci for the Me-Ow Basket. Pictures will be posted shortly.

LCR Hosts Open House

Last Chance Ranch Hosted an Open House on September 16th and while it started quite soggy and wet; it ended up a shining success! Not only did the sunhine appear but the volunteers again did a wonderful job at making the entire day come off without a hitch. Check out their website :http://www.lastchanceranch.org/index.html

It was a day filled with educational seminars, pony rides, great food, a tack sale and so much more.

Seminars and speakers were organized for the entire day and setup to cover a variety of horse topics. These included: Emergencies, When do I call the Vet. The big gentle giant of a draft, Ansylow, in the first photo with Lori and Jacki was the dear who helped conduct this session.

The art of Equine Massage was a wonderful topic that helped the volunteers and visitors learn about pressure points, how to tell when the horse's back is sore, and so many other points of interest that opened up the visitors and participants to what effect these techniques provide for the benefit of the horse.

There were childrens games, face painting, balloons and so much for the entire family to enjoy. Watch their calendar of events for their up and coming scheduled event.

Next year will you be there - check it out for yourselves. It is a wonderful environment for the horses and a way for people to do pitch in help and do so much good.

LCR Hosts Pet First Aid Seminar

Last Chance Equine Rescue held a Pet First Aid Training Seminar on September 9th for 20 volunteers. The training site was graciously provided by the Richlandtown Fire Company. It was a busy day for all but a lot of fun learning.

Tia had a great time helping everyone learn how to take vital signs. Below she shows us what a great demo dog she is!! - showing off for everyone in class, and loving all the attention.

Paws in The Park

Animal Medical Center had a wonderful event and even though the weather was less than perfect, the first annual Animal Medical Center Paws In The Park Charity Dog Walk and Pet Fair at the Water Works Park in Trappe, PA was a great success! Hats off to their wonderful staff !

Participating along many vendors - was yours truly and some very happy, hearty sitters: Kelly with April, Debbie, Chick, Julann, and Tia and me. We had a good time doing the charity walk, watched the agility demo, visited the police dog and his trainer, and met many wondeful people and dogs. What a wonderful experience. We look forward to participating in a wonderful event next year. Come join us!

We also met Last Chance Equine Rescue - such wonderful people and so much they do. This wonderful group rehabilitates many abused and ill-treated horses. They have implemented foster programs for those healing, and an adoption program as well. They were very active caring and rehoming during the Katrina rescue efforts for dogs and cats. The stable where my Chestnut gelding, TB, TC is boarded, Horse Haven Akers, just adopted a wonderful, gentle giant of a palomino Percheron gelding, Mason from Last Chance Ranch. He is an absolute delight!

Just a quick note to let everyone know we will be presenting Pet First Aid at the Richlandtown Fire Company for the Last Chance Ranch volunteers on September 9, 2006. It will be a great day with wonderful people.

The following week, Last Chance Ranch Equine Rescue will host an Open House, September 16th. We will be presenting on Sunday - stop by and visit us - what a great way to support the hard working volunteers.

Pet First Aid Certification Available this Fall

For everyone who has had the misfortune to deal with an emergency situation they were totally unprepared to handle. Take a few minutes and consider taking a class that could benefit both you and your pet. It could help you save your pets life in an emergency situation. Give a gift of Love - learn how to handle emergencies and get your pet safely to the veterinary hospital for emergency care.

The Springford School District will be offering the PetTECH First Aid Certification coursework as a part of their up-coming Fall Adult Education evening program. Upon completing a series of all 6 sessions participants will receive a certification. Participants will be certified for Pet First Aid including Rescue Breathing and CPR for 2 years. You must attend all classes to obtain certification.

Pet Sitting Webcam?

Welcome to our newest tool, a wonderful way to talk to everyone! Our Newsletter will be posted on the website shortly to advise everyone we are considering a petsitting webcam being available to our clients. We know how worried everyone is when leaving their "babies" - even when you have the best care for them; you just can't help but worry. This would give you an opportunity to see what the little darlings are doing during your absence.

Several options will be available and are being reviewed for feasibility. Here are a few currently being considered:

A permanent webcam, you can check anytime from work or travel - all you will need is a pc and an internet connection. Each client would have a username and password to access their location.
A webcam setup during a specific vacation times so you have access to check on your pets care and well being.
A weekly, monthly or some specific time period usage where the webcam would remain in the home.
An occasional usage, check in on pets not feeling too well when you left for work.

There are many questions to answer before this becomes a reality; but most of our clients currently have pc's that would support this technology.

You are the best judge of what would work for you. Please let us know what you think. I am enjoying the time to chat with each of you and look forward to hearing all your comments about our potential "Pet Sitting Webcam".
